We are a group of hard-working and dedicated individuals who have teamed up with like-minded Nepalese counterparts to raise funds and awareness to support Nepalese communities in need following the social, environmental and economical devastations of the April 2015 Nepal Earthquake. Our team has come together to include those living in and those who have visited and volunteered in these communities of need as well as individuals who are eager in giving back through rebuilding a nation. Our team is committed to donating all funds and donations directly to our projects in these Nepalese communities.
CURRENT PROJECTS
Our current and most recent project is the goal to create a healthy and clean water supply to a small village, Khari, as those supplies were lost in the devastation of the Nepalese earthquake. Currently, the villagers are walking one and a half hours daily to seek such water supplies.
Our goal is to raise $4800 to set up a well, water pump, piping, and water tanks in the village to provide the villagers with a sustainable alternative.
OUR STORY
Our organization began through the inspiration and ideas focused on the support of small mountain villages located near the epicenter of the first and second terrible earthquakes that rocked the very lives of the Nepali people. Our foundation was built off of a 2014 trip by the group “Students Leading Initiative For Change”, which went to Nepal and volunteered at an orphanage while also having the opportunity to meet some incredible individuals while exploring the country. Riley Boudreau (one of the founders of Stand With Nepal [SWN]) was part of this original trip along with a couple other members now on the SWN team.
Some of the individuals met in Nepal include Ram Timalsina, Krishna Raj Adhikari, Ravi Chudhary, and Naren Sharma who now form the governing body of our Nepali team. From day one of this project these members have been working tirelessly to help out their ‘brothers and sisters’, which is how they refer to their fellow countrymen, in the effort to rebuild their lives. The first night the early stages of our team asked Krishna and Ravi to go meet Ram in the village was the same night that the second earthquake struck. Barely escaping with their lives as a nearby building collapsed, Krishna and Ravi have never turned back and remain determined to help. Naren Sharma (who is a Nepali doctor) was already working on a self-led project helping the locals with their health care needs, and consequently was more than happy to join our organization and effort. His addition has allowed us to spread our focus from not only rebuilding, but ensuring rehabilitation in a medical sense to the villages we are assisting. With the help of our Nepali team, and incredibly generous donors, we have managed to rebuild 55 houses, 3 schools, and administered food and medicine to an area of 900 families in the high mountains. With Naren’s help we have also ensured all of the villagers have proper mosquito nets (some 1,250 houses worth) and medication to safely survive the monsoon season. We have also successfully organized and funded a blood drive to help support the needs of Nepalese healthcare systems. Currently, we are undertaking a new project to create a healthy and clean water supply to a small village, Khari, as those supplies were lost in the devastation of the Nepalese earthquake. At this time, the villagers are walking one and a half hours daily to seek such water supplies. Our goal is to raise $4800 to set up a well, water pump, piping, and water tanks in the village to provide the villagers with a sustainable alternative.
Our focus is on the small high mountain villages because NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations) such as Red Cross give support primarily to high population density areas, which leaves small villages to fend for themselves. Our Nepali team is continuously holding meetings with surrounding village officials to determine which outlying areas most need our help next and in what ways.
Operationally we send funds directly to our Nepali team who in turn manage the purchase of needed supplies from nearby areas so that while helping the devastated areas we also boost the local economy. According to Chad Shipmaker, a representative of the World Food Program, many large NGOs send resources into the areas in need and consequently disrupt the local economy and destroy the livelihoods of many in the local market. This motivated us to develop our support minimizing negative impact and actually stimulating the local Nepali markets.
Unlike many charity organizations, 100% of funds donated to Stand With Nepal go directly to the project on the ground in Nepal.
We welcome any offers of support whether through funds, ideas, or help with publicity to help our campaign reach as many Nepali citizens who’s lives have been destroyed as possible. Most importantly - we thank you for you support and dedication with us to this cause and to working towards rebuilding this nation.
